MAGALANG: Celebrating Camaru Festival 2018 in Pampanga

Magalang Pampanga is one of the developing towns in country’s Culinary Capital which majority of its land area is agricultural evident in the presence of the oldest agricultural school in the region, the Pampanga Agricultural College which is now Pampanga State Agricultural University(PSAU), a center for agri-based education in the province. With rich agricultural land, this little town is producing fresh and quality produce such as rice, fruits and vegetables.

Magalang was derived from the word ‘Magalo’ which means a way of moving and waving from one place to another that characterized the movement of the camaru”mole cricket” which is the main concept of the Pyestang Camaru.

But some scholars theorize that the first settlers of Magalang were migrants from a village in Indonesia called ‘Magelang,’ which was also located at the foot of a volcano that resembled Mount Arayat. In Bergano’s dictionary, ‘magalang’ was an ancient Kapampangan word for abundance.

This year’s theme is “Magalenos, Misanmetung Queng Panyulung Ban Kamtan Ing Pamagbayung Pangarapan” The four days celebration of 5th Pyestang Camaru this year started on Tuesday August 21 with Pulaying Camaru (color run) at followed by institutional float and multisectoral parade in which best float was awarded to Pampanga State Agricultural University(PSAU).

On the second day, local cooks battled it out and show their culinary skills in Calutung Camaru, an interbarangay cooking competition wherein Grand winner is Barangay Sta. Cruz, 2nd Place – Barangay Sto. Nino and 3rd Place – Barangay San Francisco. The winning dish of Barangay Sta Cruz is Biringhe with Camaru. Celebrity Chef Sau Del Rosario is one of the judges in the said culinary competition.

A tattoo competition “Dutdutan Camaru” will be held at the Bren Z. Guiao Memorial Sports Complex followed by the “Camaru Got Talent” wherein locals will showcase their talents, Harry Rodriguez won the said competition.

On August 24,  the second mayor’s inter-barangay basketball tournament will open at the Bren Z. Guiao gym and the event will be close with a concert of Aegis and Chocolate Factory at the town plaza.

Magalang is one of the promising towns in Pampanga for it’s rich culture and abundance of quality produces from different farms in the area. Given it’s proximity to Clark Freeport Zone and tourism potentials, Magalang will surely be the next Farm Tourism destination in Central Luzon! 🙂
