Globe Telecom Strengthens Commitment to Fight Online Child Pornography

In a continued commitment to create a safer online environment, Globe Telecom has intensified its efforts against online child pornography by blocking thousands of harmful websites. In 2024, the telecommunications company successfully restricted access to 3,096 domains associated with child sexual abuse and exploitation materials (CSAEM). This marks a slight increase from the 3,047 domains blocked in 2023, highlighting Globe’s ongoing dedication to this critical issue.

Since the inception of its #MakeITSafePH campaign in 2017, Globe has prioritized the protection of Filipino internet users, particularly children, from online exploitation. This initiative aligns with the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009 (Republic Act 9775), which mandates Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to implement technologies that prevent access to and transmission of child pornography. To bolster these efforts, Globe has invested over USD 2.7 million in advanced content filtering systems, enhancing its ability to detect and block illegal content effectively.

Atty. Irish Krystle Salandanan-Almeida, Globe’s Chief Privacy Officer, emphasized the importance of Safer Internet Day, stating, “This day serves as a timely reminder of the need to protect children from online exploitation. Our dedication to addressing online child abuse goes beyond blocking harmful sites. It involves a comprehensive approach that includes technological solutions, strong partnerships, and proactive educational programs.”

Globe’s initiatives are further strengthened by collaborations with key organizations, including the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Philippine Chamber of Telecommunications Operators (PCTO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF). These partnerships enhance Globe’s capacity to combat online child sexual abuse and exploitation, a pressing issue underscored by a recent study from the U.S.-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which identified the Philippines as a significant source of Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) content.

In addition to its blocking efforts, Globe’s #MakeITSafePH campaign promotes educational programs and awareness activities aimed at empowering Filipino internet users to protect themselves online. As Safer Internet Day highlights the collective responsibility to ensure online safety, Globe remains steadfast in its mission to create a safer digital landscape, particularly for vulnerable children.
